My blog is carbon neutral and your's can be too!

Thanks to the Ecolutionist (they have a great logo, am so jealous!) I found out how I can make my blog carbon neutral by participating in the 'My Blog is Carbon Neutral Initiative'.

The initiative was created in Germany by the Go Green programme and has now been extended to the USA. The concept is simple; for each blog a tree is planted to neutralize the emissions created from internet usage including the mainframe computers, servers and their cooling systems.  The programme is currently planting trees in the Plumas National Forest situated in the Sierra Nevada between California and Nevada in the USA. The forest suffered devastating fires and this initiatives is part of it's reforestation programme.

To participate includes three easy steps and you get an ace badge/logo to proudly display on your blog:

1. Write a blog post about the initiative + insert your favourite button
2. E-mail the link to your post to CO2-neutral@kaufda.de
3. They plant a tree for your blog in Plumas’!

You might be thinking this is all fine and well, but how does it work?  Environmental activist and physicist at Harvard University, Alexander Wissner-Gorss PhD did a study of carbon dioxide emissions of each blog visit. Supposing an average blog gets 15,000 visits per month (I wish, but here's hoping!...or not?) it then has a yearly carbon dioxide emission of 8lbs (3,6kg). By planting one tree the atmosphere can be relieved of an average of 11lbs (5kg) of carbon dioxide per year.

But it doesn't just stop at your  blog. Spread the word by letting your friends who have blogs know about the programme and emailing any of your favorite blogs to encourage them to participate as well. The programme currently has 1,188 blogs participating and you can CLICK HERE to see who they are.
