I'm going Meat Free for a Week!

I'm fundraising for Meat Free Week!

I'm going Meat Free for a week from the 23rd March till March 29th 2015. I'm doing this to raise awareness about excessive meat consumption and the impact it is having on our health, animals and the environment. And in the process, I'm raising money for some important charities.

I’d like to think that my current diet is relatively not meat excessive (although I do eat a lot of cheese!). I live with a vegetarian and we’re part of veg-box scheme but I’m still happy to participate in Meat Free Week as I hope to show people that significantly cutting down on your meat consumption will make a significant difference to your health and a substantial difference to the environment.

I strongly believe that the only person you can change without force is yourself and that sustainable realistic lasting changes come about when a person decides for themselves and are not badgered, guilt-tripped or belittled into making those decisions or choices. I think the Meat Free Week is a great way of giving people a taster of what those changes could be like and raising awareness of those issues.

I hope that I can lead by example and as someone who loves their food, show that you can still have yummy food and a good quality of life that isn’t harmful to the environment by cutting down the amount of meat you eat and every once and while going completely meat free!

A few facts I’d like to highlight about the benefit of going Meat Free for a week (if not longer!):

Scientists and environmentalists agree that reducing meat consumption will take pressure off the planet's resources. While estimates vary, it is clear that greenhouse gas production from livestock and meat production sector is significant and consumer can reduce their greenhouse gas footprint by reducing the volume of their meat consumption.

Leading water scientists have warned there will not be enough water available to produce food for the expected 9 billion population of 2050. It takes 3,900 litres to produce 1kg of chicken and just 1,300 litres of water to produce 1kg of wheat.

At a time when some 800 million people suffer from malnutrition, one third of the world's cereal harvest is fed to farm animals – enough to feed almost three billion people.

Globally, each year more than 66 billion animals are slaughtered for food to feed 7 billion people. Every minute, around 120,000 farm animals are slaughtered around the world. Many animals endure mutilation with no anesthetic e.g. teeth being pulled out, tails and beaks sliced off.

High consumption of red and processed meat (like bacon, ham, sausages, salami and other packaged meat such as pastrami) is associated with colon cancer and increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.
